I used to think rest was what you earned after working hard.
Sleep was optional. Stillness was uncomfortable.
And if I wasn’t checking boxes, tracking numbers, or pushing through — I felt like I was failing.
But here’s what I eventually learned (the hard way):
You can’t heal in the same state that made you sick.
The Hustle That Looked Like Health
For years, I wore “busy” like a badge of honor.
I’d wake up early to squeeze in workouts, skip lunch to chart notes, and tell myself I’d rest after I hit my goal weight.
Rest was something I’d do once I deserved it.
And sure, I was getting things done — but I was also running on stress chemistry.
Cortisol high, sleep shallow, metabolism sluggish.
I was stuck in a loop where effort felt noble but progress felt impossible.
That’s the trap most women fall into:
They think burnout means they just need more motivation.
When really, burnout means your body is begging for safety.
The Day I Finally Stopped
It wasn’t some magical “aha” moment — it was a Tuesday.
I remember looking in the mirror, exhausted and puffy, and thinking, I’m doing everything right… so why do I feel worse?
That’s when it clicked.
My body wasn’t betraying me.
It was protecting me.
Every skipped meal, every sleepless night, every “just push through” — my nervous system had been interpreting it as danger.
And until I changed that message, nothing else I did would stick.
So I stopped forcing.
And started resting — not as a reward, but as a responsibility.
Rest Isn’t Laziness — It’s Metabolic Strategy
Rest isn’t a passive thing. It’s a biological process that resets your hormones, repairs your cells, and recalibrates your metabolism.
Here’s what started to change once I treated rest like medicine:
🩵 My sleep quality improved.
Deeper sleep = lower cortisol and better insulin sensitivity.
🩵 My hunger cues normalized.
I stopped craving sugar at 10 PM because my body finally trusted I’d rest.
🩵 My workouts worked again.
Recovery became where my strength was built, not where it disappeared.
🩵 My weight started to stabilize.
Not because I am doing less — but because my body isn’t in fight-or-flight anymore.
Rest doesn’t make you “soft.”
It makes your body responsive.
The Science of Slowing Down
Your nervous system runs the whole show.
When you’re always “on,” your brain keeps releasing cortisol and adrenaline — chemicals that tell your body to conserve energy and store fat.
But when you rest, your parasympathetic system (the “rest and digest” side) takes over.
That’s when healing happens: digestion, hormone balance, muscle repair, even fat loss.
You don’t need to earn that state — you need to create it.
And the best part? It doesn’t take hours.
It takes intention.
How I Rest Now (Even on Busy Days)
Rest doesn’t mean bubble baths and disappearing for the weekend — though, those are nice.
It means building micro-rest into your day.
Drinking water before coffee.
Five deep breaths before opening emails.
Sitting down while eating instead of multitasking.
Saying no before your body forces you to.
Going to bed before you’re exhausted, not after.
It’s not glamorous.
But it’s the quiet work that changes everything.
The Truth About “Results”
When I finally made rest a priority, everything I’d been chasing showed up: energy, progress, clarity, peace.
My clients see it too.
The moment they stop fighting their bodies and start supporting them, results follow — not because they worked harder, but because they finally got out of their own way.
Your body can’t bloom in survival mode.
It thrives in safety.
And rest is what tells it, you’re safe now.
Next Steps
If you’ve been hustling for healing — I get it.
You’re not lazy. You’re just tired of strategies that never gave you permission to rest.
