I spent years in a tug-of-war with my body.
I pulled. It pulled back.
I restricted. It rebelled.
I punished. It protected.
And through all of that? I was convinced the problem was me.
I wasn’t disciplined enough. I didn’t try hard enough. I must not have wanted it enough.
Sound familiar?
If you’ve been stuck in that loop of diets, guilt, and “starting over” every Monday, let me say this with my whole nurse-heart: you are not broken. The system is.
The diet industry taught us to chase weight loss like a prize. But what if the real win isn’t a smaller body—what if it’s peace with food and feeling at home in your skin again?
Let’s talk about what it really takes to heal your relationship with food, rebuild body trust, and lose weight without going to war with yourself.
When Weight Loss Feels Like a Battle
Let’s start here: weight loss isn’t inherently bad.
Wanting to feel lighter, more energized, or more comfortable in your body is not the enemy.
But for so many women I coach, it’s not just about the number. It’s about the story behind it. The decades of yo-yo dieting. The black-and-white food rules. The moments you ate something “bad” and then spiraled into shame.
The body image issues don’t come out of nowhere. They’re built—slowly—by years of being told you need to shrink to be worthy.
One of my lowest points? I once ate a piece of cake at a party and spent the next day drinking lemon water and skipping meals to “make up for it.” I wasn’t celebrating my friend—I was calculating damage control.
It wasn’t about food.
It was about guilt, control, and the belief that I had to earn my right to exist in a body.
That’s not health. That’s war.
Step One: Stop Trying to Fix What Was Never Broken
Repeat after me: My body is not the problem.
Seriously. Say it out loud. Whisper it if you have to.
The world profits off your insecurities. Every time a new “cleanse” drops or someone posts their 6-pack in front of a ring light, we’re fed the idea that our current bodies are something to fix.
But here’s the thing—healing begins when you stop trying to shrink yourself into someone else’s idea of health.
I started healing when I stopped asking, “How can I lose weight fast?”
And started asking, “What does my body need from me today?”
Sometimes that answer was rest.
Sometimes it was movement.
Sometimes it was a homemade veggie scramble instead of drive-thru pancakes.
And sometimes it was the pancakes—because I was emotionally drained and needed connection more than nutrition in that moment.
Weight loss without the war means learning to choose what nourishes you, not what punishes you.
The Real Work: Rebuilding Trust With Your Body
Most of us don’t have an issue with “willpower.”
We have an issue with body trust.
Here’s what I mean: after years of dieting, many of us don’t know the difference between hunger and boredom. Fullness and guilt. Nourishment and numbing.
That’s why my first advice to coaching clients isn’t “cut carbs” or “track macros.” It’s to pause and notice.
Before you eat, ask:
Am I physically hungry?
What kind of hunger is this—stress, boredom, comfort, habit?
What would actually feel satisfying?
That alone can shift everything. It’s not sexy. It won’t sell magazines. But it’s powerful.
And it’s exactly what neuroplasticity teaches us: the brain can rewire how it responds to cues. When you start approaching food with curiosity, not criticism, your brain starts creating new, healthier pathways—ones that support body awareness, not body war.
Body Image Isn’t About Liking What You See
Here’s a curveball: you don’t have to love your body to respect it.
I have stretch marks and soft parts and a stubborn left knee that pops when I walk up stairs. Some days, I don’t feel cute. And that’s okay.
Because the goal isn’t perfection—it’s peace.
Healing your body image doesn’t mean looking in the mirror and squealing with joy every morning. It means not letting that reflection ruin your day.
It means buying clothes that fit now—not “someday.”
It means unfollowing the fitness influencers who make you feel small.
It means saying no to conversations that revolve around weight loss and calorie guilt.
That’s real self-care. That’s mental weight loss.
Practical Shifts That Changed Everything
Let me give you some specific things I changed—not all at once, but gradually, over time:
I stopped labeling food as “good” or “bad.”
Instead, I ask: how will this make me feel—physically, emotionally, energetically?I ate more consistently.
No more skipping breakfast to “save calories.” I learned that eating regularly actually reduced my cravings and emotional eating.I built meals around protein, fiber, and fat.
Not because I had to—but because I finally felt what balance did for my energy and mood.I ditched the scale.
For a year. I focused on how my clothes fit, how I was sleeping, how my moods stabilized. And when I did weigh myself again? I was down—but more importantly, I didn’t care. I felt free.I let joy in.
Movement that felt like dancing. Meals with people I love. Chocolate without commentary. I allowed myself to live in color again.
But What About Actual Weight Loss?
I get it—you’re reading this like, “Okay, but can I still lose weight doing this?”
Yes.
But here’s the hard truth: sustainable weight loss doesn’t happen when your brain is stuck in survival mode, constantly battling guilt and restriction.
You lose weight when your body feels safe.
When stress goes down, sleep improves, hormones regulate, digestion supports you, and inflammation calms.
Weight loss becomes a side effect of healing, not punishment.
And for a lot of the women I coach, the biggest shift isn’t what they eat. It’s how they think about what they eat.
If This Hit Home, You’re Not Alone
This journey? It’s not linear.
Some days you’ll feel on top of the world. Some days, you’ll eat an entire bag of chips while hiding in the laundry room from your kids (true story).
The goal is never perfection. It’s practice.
It’s showing up again and again for your health without turning it into a battle.
And if you’ve been fighting with your body for years—maybe it’s time to call a truce.
