For the longest time, I thought I just didn’t have the willpower.
I figured other women must be stronger than me. More motivated. More disciplined.
Because every time I started a new diet or workout plan, I’d do okay for a week or two… then crash and burn.
Whether it was emotional eating, skipping the gym, or getting stuck in that all-or-nothing thinking, I blamed myself.
“You just don’t want it bad enough.”
That voice got loud. And it got mean.
But you know what I’ve learned after years of trying—and now, helping other women do the same?
It wasn’t a lack of willpower that kept me stuck.
It was a lack of strategy.
Willpower Isn’t the Problem—Your Brain Just Needs a Plan
Let’s break down something most weight loss advice forgets:
Willpower is a limited resource.
Science shows it drains throughout the day—especially if you’re stressed, tired, or hungry (hello, mom life).
If your whole “healthy habits” plan is built around resisting cravings, forcing yourself to eat clean, or pushing through burnout… it’s only a matter of time before you give up.
That’s not weakness.
That’s your biology doing what it’s designed to do.
Sustainable weight loss doesn’t come from shaming yourself into better behavior.
It comes from building a system that works with your real life and real brain.
My Rock Bottom Looked Like Chocolate Chips and Tears
One Tuesday night, I stood in front of the pantry shoveling handfuls of chocolate chips into my mouth—because I didn’t want to cook dinner, and I was done with the day.
I had eaten “perfectly” up to that point. Green smoothie, salad, grilled chicken.
But stress hit. I was tired.
And just like that… I spiraled.
I cried. I felt like a failure.
But then this thought hit me:
What if this isn’t about willpower at all? What if I just need a better plan?
That was the first day I stopped dieting and started strategizing.
Strategy #1: Stop Starting Over
The all-or-nothing mindset is one of the most common weight loss traps I see—especially in women who’ve done years of yo-yo dieting.
I used to think if I ate something “bad” like a donut, I had ruined the whole day.
So I’d eat more junk, tell myself I’d start over Monday, and feel worse by the hour.
Now I use what I call the Next Best Choice mindset.
Messed up a meal? Cool. What’s your next best choice?
One imperfect moment doesn’t cancel out all your effort.
Consistency beats perfection every time.
Strategy #2: Learn Your Triggers and Plan Ahead
Most of my emotional eating wasn’t about hunger—it was about exhaustion and stress.
I realized I was most vulnerable after long workdays, around 8-9 PM.
That’s when cravings hit, motivation tanked, and I’d end up snacking to soothe the overwhelm.
Now, I prepare for those moments in advance.
✔ I keep prepped food I like at eye-level.
✔ I stop skipping meals during the day (because under-eating leads to over-eating later).
✔ I’ve built bedtime routines that calm me without relying on food.
It’s not about restriction. It’s about knowing your patterns and building real support.
Strategy #3: Look Deeper Than “Just Eat Less”
Sustainable weight loss isn’t just about what you eat—it’s about why you eat.
Before I learned to rewire my weight loss mindset, I was caught in this loop:
I’d restrict to lose weight.
I’d feel deprived and exhausted.
I’d binge or “fall off.”
I’d shame myself.
Then I’d start over.
It wasn’t the food. It was the stories I told myself:
👉 “You’re bad for eating carbs.”
👉 “You’ll never follow through.”
👉 “You always quit.”
Once I addressed those internal beliefs—hello, inner critic—I finally started building habits that didn’t feel like punishment.
This is how you shift from diet mentality to long-term change.
Strategy #4: Make the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice
Real talk? I’m not a fan of rigid food rules or bootcamp-style routines.
I’ve learned that creating healthy habits doesn’t mean forcing yourself to be perfect—it means making the better choice easier to reach.
Here’s how I did that:
Swapped chips for roasted chickpeas I actually enjoyed
Set up a “default dinner” list for tired nights
Packed snacks in the car and purse to avoid drive-thru traps
Weight loss for women isn’t about being tougher. It’s about being smarter.
And when your environment supports your goals, you don’t have to rely on willpower every second of the day.
Strategy #5: Don’t Wait for Motivation—Create Momentum
Here’s something I wish someone had told me sooner:
You’re not going to feel motivated every day. And that’s okay.
The trick isn’t waiting to feel inspired.
The trick is taking one small action—then letting that action fuel the next.
Start with:
✔ Drinking water before coffee
✔ Stretching for 2 minutes
✔ Journaling a single sentence
Little shifts done consistently are the secret to lasting weight loss.
You build self-trust one step at a time.
You’re Not Weak—You’ve Just Been Misled
If you’ve ever felt like you’re broken, lazy, or just don’t have enough willpower to get healthy…
Please hear me.
You’re not the problem.
The diet industry just never taught you how behavior change actually works.
You don’t need more shame.
You need a smarter, more personalized strategy.
That’s what I teach now as a nurse and a coach: how to work with your body and brain—not against them.
