That’s the thing about insulin resistance: it doesn’t start with high blood sugar. It starts with your body working harder than it should to keep your blood sugar normal.
That’s where HOMA-IR comes in. It’s one of my favorite “behind-the-scenes” tests for understanding your metabolism, and it can reveal problems long before fasting glucose or A1c ever flag a warning.
Let’s keep this simple:
HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) is a calculation that uses your fasting glucose and fasting insulin results to estimate how efficiently your body responds to insulin.
If glucose is your fuel and insulin is your key, HOMA-IR shows how much effort your body is putting into turning that key.
Think of it like this:
“If your car needs more and more gas just to go the same distance, it’s not fuel-efficient anymore. The same goes for your body — if insulin keeps rising just to keep glucose stable, you’re becoming insulin resistant.”
It’s not about being diabetic or not. It’s about catching metabolic stress before it turns into something bigger.
HOMA-IR is like a metabolic stress test. It can detect early signs of insulin resistance years before fasting glucose or A1c budge.
