Understanding Testosterone in Women: The Hidden Hormone Behind Energy, Strength, and Drive
Understanding Testosterone in Women: The Hidden Hormone Behind Energy, Strength, and Drive I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a woman sit across
I still remember the first time a patient asked me, “My lab says estradiol… is that the same thing as estrogen?” It’s such a common question — and no wonder. Hormone labs can feel like alphabet soup.
Estradiol (often written as E2) is the most active form of estrogen in your body. Whether you’re dealing with irregular cycles, mood swings, fertility struggles, or hot flashes, the estradiol test is one of the best ways to check in on your hormone health.
Estradiol is part of the estrogen family, alongside estrone (E1) and estriol (E3). E2 is the main player during your reproductive years and has powerful effects across your body.
The estradiol blood test measures how much estrogen is circulating. Because levels change throughout your menstrual cycle, this test can give clues about ovulation, fertility, perimenopause, and menopause.
👉 Think of estradiol like your body’s thermostat — it rises and falls to help regulate cycles, bone health, heart health, and mood.
Balanced estradiol levels support:
Regular menstrual cycles and ovulation
Bone strength and density
Vaginal and urinary tract health
Cardiovascular protection
Cognitive function and mood
Low estradiol can cause hot flashes, irregular or absent periods, vaginal dryness, or increased bone loss.
High estradiol may point toward PCOS, ovarian cysts, tumors, or side effects of hormone therapy.
For men, estradiol matters too. Though levels are lower, it plays a role in libido, bone density, and emotional health.
Estradiol levels are reported in picograms per milliliter (pg/mL). Here are typical ranges for women (can vary by lab):
Follicular phase: 30 – 120 pg/mL
Ovulation (mid-cycle): 130 – 370 pg/mL
Luteal phase: 70 – 250 pg/mL
Postmenopausal: < 20 pg/mL
For men: 10 – 40 pg/mL
⚠️ Note: Lab ranges differ. Always review your estradiol results with your healthcare provider.
Estradiol isn’t only about your ovaries. Other things influence results:
Medications (birth control, HRT, fertility drugs)
Body composition (higher fat tissue can raise estrogen)
Stress & cortisol (chronic stress disrupts hormone balance)
Liver health (important for breaking down estrogen)
Age and life stage (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
While treatment always depends on your unique situation, these habits support hormone balance:
Eat nutrient-dense foods rich in protein, healthy fats, and fiber.
Move daily — exercise improves insulin sensitivity and estrogen balance.
Manage stress — cortisol directly impacts estrogen.
Support liver health with hydration, cruciferous veggies, and limiting alcohol.
Prioritize gut health — your microbiome helps metabolize estrogen.
