Why Your Body Stopped Trusting You (And How to Rebuild That Trust)

If your body feels resistant…
uncooperative…
reactive…
or like it “won’t do what you want” anymore…
I want you to hear this clearly:
Your body didn’t stop trusting you out of nowhere.
It learned — over time — that it wasn’t safe.
And once trust is broken, no amount of control will bring it back.
Most women don’t wake up one day and decide to betray their bodies.
It happens slowly. Quietly. “Responsibly.”
Through:
• repeated restriction
• ignoring hunger signals
• pushing through exhaustion
• using shame as motivation
• forcing plans that don’t fit real life
• overriding needs in the name of “discipline”
• treating the body like a project to manage
From the brain’s perspective, that’s not health.
That’s threat.
So the body adapts.
Not to sabotage you —
but to survive you.
When control replaces care, the nervous system learns:
• hunger isn’t safe
• rest isn’t allowed
• pleasure is dangerous
• consistency leads to pressure
• needs get punished
• signals will be ignored
• compliance is demanded, not invited
So the body stops cooperating.
Not because it’s broken.
Because trust has been violated.
And just like any relationship, trust doesn’t come back because you demand it.
It comes back when safety is restored.
Here’s the trap so many women fall into:
“My body isn’t responding — I need to be stricter.”
But from the nervous system’s perspective, stricter means:
👉 more danger
So it responds with:
• stronger cravings
• emotional eating
• fatigue
• inflammation
• inconsistency
• shutdown
• rebellion
• weight holding
Not as punishment —
as protection.
Control escalates the threat.
Safety de-escalates it.
This is the shift most wellness spaces never teach:
You don’t fix your body.
You repair your relationship with it.
And relationships rebuild trust through:
• consistency
• listening
• responsiveness
• repair after rupture
• predictability
• gentleness
• boundaries without punishment
Not perfection.
Your body doesn’t need to believe you’ll “do everything right.”
It needs to believe:
“I won’t be punished for speaking.”
This isn’t a mindset flip.
It’s a series of lived experiences.
Rebuilding trust looks like:
• eating before you’re starving
• resting before burnout
• responding to hunger without negotiation
• adjusting plans without quitting
• speaking kindly when you mess up
• stopping when something feels wrong
• choosing safety over intensity
• keeping small promises instead of big ones
Each time you do this, your body learns:
“Maybe I can trust her again.”
Here’s where I’m honest as a nurse and a coach:
If your relationship with your body has been built on years of control, criticism, and override —
your nervous system will resist safety at first.
Not because safety is wrong…
but because it’s unfamiliar.
This is why women often say:
“I know I should be kinder to myself, but I can’t.”
That’s not resistance.
That’s conditioning.
And this is where support matters.
Coaching isn’t about telling you what to eat or how to look.
It’s about:
• rebuilding trust with your body
• learning to listen without fear
• creating safety around habits
• untangling shame from self-care
• practicing consistency without pressure
• repairing the nervous system/body relationship
You don’t need someone to fix you.
You need someone to help you relearn trust.
If you’re not ready for coaching yet, that’s okay.
Trust rebuilds one interaction at a time — and your inner dialogue matters more than you think.
💛 The Inner Critic Playbook helps you:
• notice when control language shows up
• interrupt body-based shame
• soften self-attack
• create safer internal communication
• stop treating your body like an enemy
You don’t rebuild trust by promising change.
You rebuild it by changing how you relate.
