From Fixing Your Body to Befriending It: The Shift That Changes Everything

Most women don’t realize how much of their life has been spent trying to fix their body.
Fix the weight.
Fix the cravings.
Fix the shape.
Fix the lack of discipline.
Fix the inconsistency.
We’re taught — explicitly and implicitly — that our body is a problem to solve.
And if we could just get it under control,
everything else would finally fall into place.
But here’s the truth I wish more women were told sooner:
You don’t heal your body by fixing it.
You heal it by befriending it.
And that shift changes everything.
When you approach your body as something that needs to be fixed, your nervous system hears one message:
“You are not okay as you are.”
That message — even when wrapped in “health” language — creates threat.
And a body that feels threatened will:
• resist control
• rebel against restriction
• shut down consistency
• seek comfort
• protect itself at all costs
Not because it’s broken —
but because it’s trying to survive.
This is why so many women feel stuck in cycles of:
restriction → rebellion
motivation → burnout
discipline → collapse
The body isn’t the enemy.
The relationship is strained.
Imagine trying to build trust with someone who only interacts with you to correct, control, or criticize.
That’s what many women have done with their bodies — often unintentionally.
Fixing sounds like:
• “I need to get this under control.”
• “I can’t trust my hunger.”
• “I’ll rest after I earn it.”
• “I need to be stricter.”
• “I’ll be nicer once I change.”
Over time, the body learns:
👉 My signals aren’t welcome.
👉 My needs will be overridden.
👉 I’ll be punished for speaking.
So it stops cooperating.
Not to spite you —
but to protect itself.
Befriending your body doesn’t mean giving up on health.
It means changing how you pursue it.
Friendship is built on:
• listening
• responsiveness
• repair
• trust
• boundaries without punishment
• consistency without pressure
When you befriend your body, the inner dialogue shifts:
From:
“I need to control you.”
To:
“I want to understand you.”
From:
“You’re the problem.”
To:
“You’re communicating something.”
From:
“I can’t trust you.”
To:
“I’m learning how to listen.”
That shift alone regulates the nervous system — and regulated bodies change more easily.
Here’s the part most wellness spaces miss:
Habits don’t stick because we push harder.
They stick because the relationship feels safe enough to stay.
When the body feels befriended:
• hunger becomes information, not a threat
• rest becomes supportive, not lazy
• consistency feels humane, not punishing
• adjustments don’t feel like failure
• setbacks don’t trigger spirals
You stop fighting yourself.
And when the fight ends, energy returns.
This isn’t abstract.
It’s practical — and it’s doable.
Befriending your body looks like:
• eating before you’re desperate
• resting before burnout
• adjusting plans without shame
• honoring hunger without negotiation
• responding to stress with care instead of criticism
• speaking to yourself like someone you want to help
• choosing safety over intensity
• keeping small promises instead of dramatic resets
Each moment sends a message:
👉 I’m on your side.
That message builds trust — and trust changes behavior.
Here’s the honest part:
Fixing feels productive.
Befriending feels vulnerable.
Fixing gives rules.
Befriending asks for presence.
Fixing offers control.
Befriending requires listening.
For many women, listening feels risky — because historically, needs were ignored, punished, or minimized.
So the body learned:
“It’s safer not to speak.”
Undoing that takes time.
And often, support.
Coaching in this space isn’t about telling you what to do with your body.
It’s about:
• rebuilding trust after years of override
• learning to listen without fear
• creating safety around habits
• separating care from control
• practicing consistency without punishment
• repairing the relationship instead of managing symptoms
You don’t need another plan.
You need someone to walk with you while trust is rebuilt — gently, honestly, and without pressure.
If you’re tired of fighting your body and ready to try a different way, that matters.
Befriending your body doesn’t mean you stop caring about your health.
It means you stop harming yourself in the name of it.
