Mind Over Matter: How Mental Health Affects Physical Health (and What You Can Do About It)
Let’s get one thing out of the way: your brain and your body aren’t on separate teams.
I used to think they were. I believed that if I could just lose weight, exercise more, and eat cleaner, I’d finally feel better mentally too. But it turns out, the mental and physical health connection runs much deeper than I ever realized.
I remember one phase—I was meal prepping, walking daily, and checking all the “wellness” boxes. Yet I was tired all the time. Anxious. Snapping at my kids. Sleeping terribly. And, oddly enough, gaining weight. What I didn’t realize is that chronic stress and negative emotions affect your body just as much—if not more—than what’s on your plate.
That was my wake-up call: mental health affects physical health, and vice versa.
We’re not talking woo-woo here—there’s real, measurable science behind how your mental state affects your physical wellness. This is often referred to as the mind-body connection, and it’s largely driven by your nervous system and hormonal regulation.
When you’re constantly stressed or dealing with anxiety, your body enters “fight or flight” mode. Cortisol (your stress hormone) rises, digestion slows, and inflammation kicks in. Long term? This can lead to:
Digestive issues like bloating or IBS
Muscle tension and headaches
Blood sugar spikes and crashes, which mimic anxiety
Poor sleep, which messes with hunger hormones
Weakened immunity
Slower metabolism
On the flip side, when your physical health is out of balance—think poor nutrition, lack of sleep, sedentary lifestyle—it becomes harder to manage mood, energy, and focus. It’s a vicious cycle, especially for women who are already juggling so much.
As a nurse and a mom, I’ve seen firsthand how ignoring mental health can sabotage physical goals. For years, I was stuck in the loop of dieting hard, losing weight, then burning out and binging. What I didn’t understand at the time was that my emotional stress was triggering physical symptoms, and my unrealistic expectations were feeding mental burnout.
It wasn’t until I started slowing down and paying attention to how my emotions were living in my body that things began to shift. I let go of rigid food rules. I made space for rest. I started journaling, meditating, and building routines that regulated my nervous system.
And guess what? My body responded better than it ever had to any diet.
If you’re wondering how to support your mental health and physical health at the same time, here are some strategies that changed everything for me—and now I teach them to the women I coach:
Fluctuating blood sugar doesn’t just cause fatigue and cravings—it can directly impact your mental clarity, anxiety, and energy. I used to skip meals or snack on carbs alone, and I’d crash hard, emotionally and physically.
🟢 Tip: Eat protein with every meal and snack. Include healthy fats and fiber to slow the spike. Try something like: Greek yogurt with berries and chia, or eggs and avocado on sprouted toast.

The voice in your head saying, “You’ll never stick with this,” or “You’re lazy,” is not helping. In fact, that kind of self-sabotaging mindset activates the stress response and keeps you in survival mode.
🟢 Tip: Start naming and flipping your top negative thoughts. Use neutral, realistic language. If you often think, “I can’t lose weight,” try instead: “I’m learning to nourish my body in a sustainable way.”
This is exactly what we dive into with my Inner Critic Playbook, a free guide for rewiring those destructive food thoughts.
I used to work out just to “earn” food or make up for what I ate. That backfired. When I started walking outdoors, dancing in the living room with my kids, or doing gentle yoga when I felt anxious, my whole relationship with movement shifted.
🟢 Tip: Think of movement as stress relief, not weight loss. Consistency becomes easier when you actually enjoy it.
Poor sleep impacts your hormones, your cravings, your mood, and even your mental clarity. It’s often the missing link between effort and results.
🟢 Tip: Create a calming routine—dim lights, warm shower, magnesium or chamomile tea, and no phone after 9 PM. It’s not fancy, but it’s a game-changer.
Your body needs to feel safe to heal. That’s why nervous system regulation for women is a rising focus in holistic wellness. I had to learn to recognize when I was operating in fight-or-flight—and create small, daily practices to calm that response.
🟢 Tip: Try grounding exercises like deep breathing, humming, or holding something cold. Even 30 seconds of stillness helps reset your stress response.
The bottom line is this: You can eat all the kale and do all the workouts, but if your mind is running on burnout, stress, and shame, you won’t feel better—and your results won’t last.
Lasting wellness comes from treating your body with respect and your brain with care. When we start seeing mental and physical health as a team, everything starts to shift: energy, confidence, digestion, weight, and joy.
I’ve helped dozens of women make this mindset shift, and the difference is night and day. They stop spiraling every time something goes “off plan.” They start feeling connected to themselves. And they finally start seeing results that don’t disappear in two weeks.
If this article made you feel a little seen—you’re not alone. You don’t have to keep guessing why your habits aren’t sticking. You just need someone to help you connect the dots.
